Classes this week are in honor of the Fall Equinox which took place on September 22, 2009 marking the first day of autumn. The fall equinox is one of two times of year (the spring equinox being the other) when day and night are of equal lengths of time. After this point of balance the days will grow shorter and the darkness of winter will set in. This is a symbolic event for yogis as we strive for equanimity.
During this time the sun also moves into the celestial sign of Libra which amplifies the balancing energy creating a time of partnerships, harmony and equality. Libra also brings the energy element of air with it. Air awakens the inner need to learn. Fall is the perfect time to read, be contemplative and meditative.
The Hindu Goddess Kali is sometimes associated with autumn. She is the goddess of time, but she is often mistaken for the goddess of death because it is her job is to make sure everything dies so the life cycle can continue. Kali reminds us to have gratitude for the bounty brought forth from mother earth.
The ending of the summer is here and we are now moving into the quiet, reflective period of winter. Skies turn gray and people turn inward, both physically and mentally. Energy shifts from reaping to resting. Use the dark time ahead like nature does…to recuperate and rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit. Just don’t get fooled as we move into the darkness…remember the light still shines brightly inside you!
